O-1 Visas
The single figurative painting in Entangled, Yanti Zhao’s recent solo exhibition at Latitudes in New York City, is a small still-life of a winged creature lying on a yellow plate, engulfed in flames. Other works likewise thematize death, pain and time, via the depiction of cuts, tangled ropes, and cosmological whorls. Blood red dominates, especially in the show’s singular sculpture, a geometrically complicated tangle of yarn strung up in one of the gallery corners, a cross between a star, a spiderweb, and a CAD mock-up. Life is here, too, in a pretty pair of oval abstractions that feel like a fresh breeze and a handful of diminutive colorful pictures observant of leaves. Curated by Jinyi Freya Xu and Eliza Xinping Tan.
