As aid organizations know, it can be very hard to get people to care about something large and far away. So UNICEF asks for donations by telling the stories of individual children in desperate need of relief. Laura Primozic, concerned about the devastation of the Arctic landscape by global warming, constructs dioramas of icebergs and turquoise waters. Mounted on the wall, made from a combination of clay, wax, wood, metal and tinted film, and ranging in length from one to three feet, her sculptures are undeniably appealing and approachable. Even those with tiny stacks of scaffolding falling into their seas or clouds of murk blooming below invite close looking and delight. This is the Arctic made small, cute and near, and that may be a good thing—so long as Greenpeace is there to hold out a collection cup.
